Why the pictures on the business cards?
I’ve got to ask: Why do real estate agents put pictures on their business cards?
Lawyers don’t, at least, didn’t.
Dentists and doctors don’t.
Why is it a picture’s so important?

Pictures on agent business cards have always irked me too. I personally don’t subscribe to that method and often ask why some do. It doesn’t seem professional at all to me. However, I can give a couple of ideas as to why this might be. You mentioned dentists, doctors and lawyers and you’re right. But they have offices and typically do all of their business in their offices (especially doctors and dentists). What I am getting at is the general public walks into their establishments, therefore the initial meeting is warmer. Often times real estate agents meet clients for the first time in public places or at a property. Safety and familiarity issues are the only reason I can see putting your picture on a card. And I’m still not going to do it. What really freaks me out is the people who put caricatures on their business cards. Don’t even get me started there.

A large percentage of home buyers & sellers don’t realize that most real estate agents are independent contractors and not employees. Each agent must market him or herself outside of their broker’s (i.e. RE/MAX, Cendant, etc.) marketing and/or branding efforts. The photo on the business card is just one more way that the agent disguishes themselves from every other agent. Dentists, doctors, and particularly lawyers may not have their photo on their business card, but most make sure their name is somehow part of the company name.
